Things they don’t teach you at school:
(or didn’t in my day anyway!)
- Negotiating
- How to drive
- Cookery
- Money – saving, investing, tax, etc
- How to set up your own business
- How to travel safe in foreign countries
- Networking / influencing / selling
- Health / fitness / eating well
- Successful long term relationships
Things that many adults don’t know enough about (and that includes me for some of these)
- Survival skills – making a fire, a shelter, finding water and food, etc
- Manly things like welding and how to fix stuff
- Finance and balance sheets, investment, shares etc
- Emotional intelligence – understanding yourself and the behaviour of others
- All the things on my school list above
- Time Management
- Stress – how to avoid, what to do if experiencing it
- Goal setting – why it’s so important and how to do it
- The true reality of (and link between) careers, money, ‘success’ (whatever that is!) and happiness
What did I miss?
In line with the true reality of careers… they don’t teach you that you can learn to love a job or field as you develop competence and excellence through work. Instead people are always saying to follow your passion. I wasted a lot of years trying to figure out what my passion was. I never even realized it until a few years ago, when I read the book “So Good They Can’t Ignore You.”
